These were the pre-ski-lift days of lace-up boots, free heels, and bamboo poles, when everyone had to “earn their turns” by hiking up a hill to ski down. I designed the Larsdatter sweater for my daughter Anna on her 25th birthday and made her and my daughter-in law Paula these slippers from the same motif for Christmas that year. This motif is full of symbols for hope, love, kindness, charity, growth, happiness, courage, understanding and goodwill—all represented by the tulips and hearts on the top of the slipper (John 13:34). The heel has a crown, to represent blessings and happiness. (Isaiah 35:10). The sole of slipper is a sea of stars (Matthew 2:10) that represent the stars in the heavens that bring us light in darkness. It was created for Harrisville Designs Deep Winter Collection. Lina is knit with Harrisville Designs’ Highland yarn. It’s a super quick knit. Yoke sweaters like this one were traditionally designed bottom-up, and one of the advantages of bottom-up knitting is that you knit the body, then you knit the sleeves (one at a time and unattached) so the sleeves knit up quickly. Sleeve Island is less daunting, because the sleeves are portable and such a quick knit.

There are two length options for the sleeves in the pattern. There is a longer version (as pictured) that allows the cuff to either be worn long and cozy and cover your hands or to be rolled up. Alternatively, the sleeve may be knit with a more traditional, shorter length. The sleeves are joined to the body and then the fun starts. You get to knit the colorwork yoke. This is my favorite part of the knit. This pattern is a pretty simple knit. You will have to occasionally catch floats. The steek is then cut and finally, the stitches for the button bands are knit, buttons are sewn on, and the last step is knitting the neck band. Give your Lina a quick steam block, and your Lina will be keeping you warm in no time. The gauge is 15 stitches over 4 inches, so it’s a very quick knit.

Use a measuring tape to tailor-fit Lina to you. There are a few rows with three colors. Charts are read from right to left.

Once the body reaches the underarm, stitches are bound off for the underarm, and steek stitches are added so that you can continue knitting in the round. Stitches are decreased on both sides of the armhole steek on the body to shape the body for the set-in sleeves. A steek is also added for the front neck opening. The sleeves are knit in the round and a steek is added when the sleeve meets the underarm, so that you can continue knitting in the round and working the decrease for the set-in sleeves.

When knitting with three colors, do not cross any of the steeks with Contrast Color D. Simply break the yarn, and weave in the ends away from the steek. The steeks for the armholes, sleeves and neck opening are cut. The front-shoulder stitches are knitted to the back-shoulder stitches with a three-needle bind off for a tidy seam. The sleeves are sewn to the body with a mattress stitch. It’s the perfect size to keep him warm in his pram, stroller, or car seat, or while being held by his mama. The star motif is taken from my Mette Cardigan. I love this motif with the stars representing protection, guidance, and light, with hearts in the corners that form smaller stars representing love and courage. The Mette cardigan was designed with my grandfather’s grandmother Mette Hansen in mind. She was the essence of hope, love, protection and courage. This blanket connects Baby Fritz to his family, reminds him he is dearly loved, protects him from the cold, and helps him feel all of our love through this snuggly warm blanket. My grandma loved roses. She lived in a Victorian house, built by my great-grandpa for his bride in 1900. It was my grandpa’s childhood home. This lovely Victorian house was surrounded chestnut trees, an irrigation ditch, cherry trees, apple trees, lilacs, bridal , snowball bushes, and even a tulip tree that my great-grandfather planted from seeds that he carried from England. The vegetable garden to the north of the fed our entire family during the summer and through the winter. My home was in Cache Valley, where the winters are long and cold and not hospitable to growing roses. But my grandma loved roses, so she had a small rose garden. Year after year, she tended her roses, covered them with straw so they would survive the winter. Each spring when they returned, my Grandma would rejoice. And if they didn’t make it, she would replant with and hopefully hardier varieties.

Every time I visited my Grandma’s house in the summer she would have a rose in her front room, and though the yard was full of other flowers, we’d rush out to the garden to see her rose garden. They were her pride and joy, and once, when times were tough, and my grandparents feared they would have to move from the farm to the city, my grandma would console herself with the thought that maybe she could grow roses in Salt Lake City. I live in Salt Lake City now, and I miss my grandma and her house, but I have surrounded my home with roses.
